Important Notes on Connection Speed

The 56kbps connection speed for students and instructors is a low-end system requirement. At this speed, our testing shows that you can navigate a small course (30 topics) with large topics (40kb per page) at 15 seconds per topic or less. This is about the maximum time most of us will wait for a web page before getting distracted and punching buttons or walls.

When connecting at speeds lower than the required 56kbps, you will still be able to navigate topics inside LearnCentrix. However, please be patient. Your topic delivery times may be greater than 15 seconds, particularly for large courses (more than 30 topics) or large topics (more than 40kb per page).

Developers and administrators require a higher connection speed (200kbps) because the tasks associated with these roles are more complicated. It takes more bandwidth to create courses, add students, run reports, add topics, build web pages, and upload files. Again, you can develop courses using a slower connection, but at some point you will begin testing your patience.

For Developers Only
The connection speed of your target audience should determine the content and size of your course material. Multimedia is great for broadband users. However, due to the size of graphics, video, and sound clips, you must use these sparingly for a dial-up audience.

If your audience is "everyone," then consider developing two versions of your course: one multimedia and one text-only. A student connected at 56kbps will wait 25 seconds for a 100kb graphic but only 9 seconds for 100kb of pure text, about 2500 words. For comparison, this entire page has just 750 words.

A picture is actually worth 6950 words, not the widely publicized 1000.

Lycos' webmonkey is a great site for web developers and there you'll find an interesting article on site optimization.
